Originally an all-purpose barnyard dog, the Pembroke was once invaluable to farmers in Wales.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an iconic, highly intelligent herding dog famously associated with British royalty. Despite their short stature and elongated bodies, they are incredibly athletic and were originally bred to move cattle by nipping at their heels. They possess a thick double coat that sheds moderately year-round.
Pembrokes are highly affectionate, incredibly loyal, and fiercely alert, making them excellent watchdogs. However, their intelligence means they bore easily and require significant mental stimulation to prevent destructive behavior. Their thick coat requires weekly brushing, and their long spines mean you must carefully manage their weight to prevent serious back issues.
