The Rafeiro do Alentejo is a massive, heavily muscled, and intensely powerful livestock guardian from Portugal. Bred to protect estates and flocks from predators, they are highly independent, naturally nocturnal, and possess an imposing, majestic presence.
The Rafeiro is deeply devoted to its family but possesses overwhelming guarding instincts. They are highly suspicious of strangers and fiercely protective of their territory. They require an incredibly experienced owner, massive early socialization, and firm leadership. They are not suited for apartment living and require vast open spaces. Their short coat is easy to maintain.
