The Cão de Castro Laboreiro is a highly rugged, intensely protective livestock guardian from Portugal. Bred to protect flocks from wolves in the brutal mountains, they are fiercely independent, naturally suspicious of strangers, and possess a striking, wolf-like appearance.
The Castro Laboreiro is deeply devoted to its family but possesses overwhelming guarding instincts. They are highly suspicious of strangers and fiercely protective of their territory. They require an incredibly experienced owner, massive early socialization, and firm leadership. They are not suited for apartment living and require vast open spaces. Their short coat is easy to maintain.
