The Norwegian Elkhound is a highly energetic, intensely alert spitz breed used for hunting moose (elk) in Scandinavia. They possess a stunning, thick silver-grey double coat, a tightly curled tail, and an incredibly robust, fearless demeanor, capable of holding giant game at bay.
The Elkhound is deeply loyal to its family, brilliantly smart, and highly independent. Because they were bred to hold game at bay by barking constantly, they are intensely vocal and make exceptional watchdogs. They require vigorous daily exercise and firm, consistent leadership. Their thick coat blows out heavily twice a year, requiring intense brushing.
