The American Akita is a giant, incredibly powerful, and profoundly majestic spitz breed. Significantly larger and heavier than the Japanese Akita Inu, they possess a stunning, thick double coat, a massive bear-like head, and were bred for guarding and hunting large game.
The American Akita is a highly serious working dog. They are deeply devoted to their family but possess an overwhelming prey drive and immense dog aggression. They require an incredibly experienced, firm owner and absolute consistency in training. Their thick coat blows out heavily twice a year, requiring intense brushing.
