The Griffon Nivernais is a rugged, wire-haired scenthound hailing from the Nivernais region of France. Originally bred to hunt wolves and wild boar in dense, unforgiving terrain, they are incredibly tough, fiercely determined, and possess a uniquely messy, unkempt appearance that belies their athletic prowess.
This breed is a true working hound. They are deeply loyal to their handler but naturally suspicious of strangers and highly independent. They require an incredibly active owner who can provide vigorous daily exercise; without it, they become bored and highly destructive. Their harsh, wire coat requires weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping to maintain its weather-resistant properties.
