The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a tough, wiry-coated, short-legged scenthound from Brittany. Bred to hunt rabbit and hare in brutal, thorny terrain, they are fiercely courageous, incredibly fast for their size, and possess a harsh, golden-red coat that protects them from the elements.
Unlike many other bassets, the Fauve is incredibly energetic, highly alert, and surprisingly agile. They are deeply affectionate, highly playful family dogs, but they possess an overwhelming prey drive and will chase anything that moves. They require vigorous daily exercise. Their harsh, wiry coat requires regular brushing and professional hand-stripping to maintain its texture.
