The Akita is a massive, heavily boned Japanese spitz breed. They are profoundly loyal, fiercely protective guardians that require a highly experienced owner.

Key Training Tips:

• Dog Aggression: They are notoriously intolerant of other dogs, especially of the same sex. Massive, early, and continuous socialization is absolutely critical.
• Establish Respect: They do not obey out of a desire to please; they obey out of respect. You must be an incredibly confident, unwavering leader.
• Positive Motivation: Despite their toughness, they are sensitive and will become aggressive if treated harshly. Use firm, positive reinforcement.

They are intensely devoted to their family but will never be a highly social dog park breed.
