The Schipperke is a highly energetic, brilliantly smart, and fiercely independent little watchdog from Belgium. Originally bred as a rat-catcher and watchdog on canal boats, they possess a striking, harsh black coat, a fox-like face, and an intensely curious, fearless demeanor.
The Schipperke is famously known as the "little captain." They are intensely alert, highly vocal watchdogs who will investigate everything. They possess boundless energy and absolutely require vigorous daily exercise and mental stimulation. They are brilliant escape artists and require highly secure fencing. Their thick double coat requires regular brushing, especially during shedding season.
