The Cão da Serra de Aires is a highly energetic, exceptionally agile, and brilliantly smart herding dog. Often called the "monkey dog" due to their comical facial expressions, they possess a shaggy, single coat and were bred to herd sheep and cattle in Portugal.
This breed is intensely loyal to its family but famously aloof and highly suspicious of strangers, making them excellent watchdogs. They possess boundless stamina and absolutely require vigorous daily exercise and advanced mental stimulation. Their shaggy coat does not possess an undercoat, reducing shedding, but requires intense, regular brushing to prevent severe matting.
