The breed's name can be translated from the Latin as “bodyguard dog” or “guard dog of the courtyard.”
The Cane Corso is a massive, heavily muscled Italian Mastiff whose name loosely translates to "bodyguard dog." Bred originally to hunt wild boar and protect properties in rural Italy, they are incredibly powerful, highly athletic, and possess an imposing, majestic appearance.
The Cane Corso is deeply devoted to its family but naturally highly suspicious of strangers. They are intensely protective and require an experienced, confident owner who can provide massive, ongoing socialization from puppyhood. They need vigorous daily exercise and a strong leader; otherwise, they will assume the alpha role. Their short coat is easy to care for but sheds moderately.
