Complete Guide to the Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a massive, highly dignified spitz breed from ancient China. Instantly recognizable by their lion-like mane, scowling expression, and unique blue-black tongue, they were originally bred as fierce guard dogs and hunting companions for Chinese emperors.

Temperament and Care

The Chow Chow is deeply devoted to its family but famously aloof, highly independent, and naturally suspicious of strangers. They are fiercely protective and require massive early socialization to prevent aggression. They are surprisingly lazy indoors and require only moderate exercise. Their massive double coat requires intense, regular brushing to prevent severe matting.
