The "Toller" is the smallest of the retrievers, a highly energetic, brilliantly smart, and intensely playful hunting dog. They were bred to lure ("toll") ducks within gunshot range by playing and splashing near the shore, mimicking the behavior of a fox.
The Toller is deeply devoted, highly eager to please, and exceptionally trainable, but they possess a massive prey drive and absolutely boundless energy. They require vigorous daily running and advanced mental stimulation. When excited, they emit a unique, high-pitched scream. Their beautiful, water-resistant red coat requires regular brushing to manage moderate shedding.
