The Basenji is an ancient, highly elegant hunting hound originating from Central Africa. Famously known as the "barkless dog," they possess a unique larynx that produces a yodel-like sound called a "baroo." They are incredibly fast, fiercely intelligent, and groom themselves meticulously like cats.
The Basenji is brilliantly smart but notoriously independent and stubborn. They are deeply affectionate with their families but naturally aloof with strangers. They possess an overwhelming prey drive and are brilliant escape artists; a highly secure, tall fence is mandatory. Their short coat requires virtually no maintenance, and they lack a typical "doggy odor."
