The Newfoundland is a giant, incredibly powerful, and profoundly gentle water rescue dog. Originating in Canada, they were bred to haul nets for fishermen, carry wood, and save people from drowning. They possess massive lung capacity, webbed feet, and a thick, water-resistant double coat.
The "Newfie" is famously known as the "nanny dog." They are exceptionally sweet-tempered, incredibly patient with children, and deeply affectionate. Despite their massive size, they are remarkably docile indoors. They require moderate daily exercise, preferably swimming. However, they drool profusely, and their massive coat requires intense, daily brushing to prevent painful matting.
