The Barbet is a rare, highly intelligent, and intensely joyful water retriever from France. Recognizable by their defining feature—a dense, curly, waterproof coat and a prominent beard (barbe)—they are incredibly robust swimmers, originally bred to retrieve waterfowl from freezing marshes.
The Barbet is famously sweet-tempered, deeply affectionate, and highly playful. They form intense bonds with their families and make excellent, gentle companions. They require moderate to vigorous daily exercise, preferably swimming. Their thick, curly coat does not shed much but requires intense, regular brushing and professional clipping to prevent severe matting.
