The Portuguese Water Dog is a highly athletic, brilliantly intelligent working dog. Originally bred to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle, and act as couriers between ships, they are incredibly robust swimmers. They possess a thick, waterproof coat that can be either tightly curled or wavy.
This breed is intensely energetic, highly eager to please, and deeply devoted to its family. They are famously clownish and love to be the center of attention. Because they are working dogs, they require vigorous daily exercise and advanced mental stimulation to prevent destructive boredom. Their coat does not shed, making them hypoallergenic, but requires intense, regular professional grooming.
